The Johnstounburn House Hotel, Edinburgh

It has taken the best part of four centuries to create the unique setting of Johnstounburn House. Built in 1625, but lovingly extended by successive proud owners, this historic family house - just 15 miles from the centre of Edinburgh - is now a character hotel.

Then, as now, a peaceful yet convenient retreat beside the Johnstoun Burn, this beautiful country house is surrounded by attractive gardens enclosed by traditional walls and formal yew hedges. While beyond lies lightly wooded parkland and farmland leading up to the Lammermuir Hills overlooking the busy Firth of Forth.

Although the 'new house' was begun in the 18th Century by the Borthwick's - for whom it was the centre of a large self contained country estate - Johnstounburn House owes much to the Broun's whose enscripton 'God Wills We Build' and family coat of arms is proudly displayed on the main house. The estate was later purchased by Andrew Usher of Edinburgh who made his fortune by introducing and blending Highland malts with Lowland grain whisky.

Each of our twenty bedrooms, in either the main house or in the original Coach House are individually and attractively furnished. All have a private bathroom, satelite television, radio and direct dial telephone.

The Cedar Lounge, with its open log and peat fire, is just the place to curl up with a good book or to enjoy stimulating company over coffee and liqueurs after a superb dinner.

There are over twenty golf courses within a thirty minute drive, including the world famous championship links at Gullane and Muirfield. For the keen shot we have access to some of the best shooting in the Lothians and borders, with clay shooting available on the estate, as is Off road driving. Trout fishing can be arranged on request.

Edinburgh, just half an hour away, is one of the most beautiful and historic cities in Britain. To the south is the unspoilt Border Country with its many stately homes and castles; including Abbotsford, the home of Sir Walter Scott, Floors Castle, and the 14th century Tantallon Castle, spectacularly set on the North Berwick cliffs.

Our beautiful 18th century panelled dining room is the setting for some of the best cuisine in Scotland. Chef de Cuisine René Gaté will delight your palate and satisfy your appetite with his "Art Cuisine". Our wines are carefully selected to ensure variety and quality, and we are happy to introduce anyone interested to the fantastic Amber Nectar for which Scotland is legend. Johnstounburn House, a hotel of grace and courtesy bids you welcome.
